1. Introduction Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) is a critical component for the “Environmental-Enhancing Energy” (E2E) paradigm. It has recently received increasing attention due to its advantages in rapid reaction, using wet feedstocks with no lipid-content restriction. These characteristics make HTL especially suitable for conversion of organic wastes and algae into biocrude oil and other chemicals. It is necessary and important to discuss the advances and challenges on HTL and its relevant upstream (feedstock, process, etc.) and downstream (biocrude upgrading, post HTL water management, etc.). On this purpose, an international workshop on hydrothermal liquefaction: upstream and downstream is proposed to be held on April 8, 2015 at China Agricultural University (CAU), Beijing, China. The workshop is co-organized by CAU and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC).
